The remains of a U.S. serviceman from Circleville missing since World War II were put to rest yesterday.

The Chillicothe Gazette reports 1st Lt. William Pile was assigned to the 9th Air Force in December 1944.

Lt. Pile was the pilot of a B-26 medium bomber. The plane crashed after being struck by enemy fire while on a bombing mission over Germany.

The Department of Defense says Pile and his co-pilot were reported killed in action. The other seven crewmen onboard survived the crash.

In April 2009, a Department of Defense team traveled to Germany to locate the suspected crash site. Officials say Pile’s remains were recovered and identified with DNA testing.

Pile received a burial with full military honors and family present at Arlington National Cemetery Tuesday.
