WASHINGTON (AP) — The daughter of Somali immigrants in Columbus and a Youngstown State University senior are among the 32 American men and women chosen as Rhodes Scholars to pursue post-graduate studies at Oxford University.

The Rhodes Trust announced recipients Sunday.

They include Ohio State University graduate Ilhan Dahir, who is on a Fulbright Fellowship teaching English in Turkey. She did her senior thesis on the role of western foreign fighters in the Islamic State group, and represented the United States at an international discussion in Brussels on countering violent extremism.

Also selected is Ashley Orr of Columbiana, Ohio. She is president of the Youngstown State student government association, co-founded a poverty awareness program, and has studied at the London School of Economics. The Trust says she is “extraordinarily active” in volunteer service.
