COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Ohio’s regulations for fetal tissue disposal are seeing increased attention following the state attorney general’s recent investigation into three Planned Parenthood affiliates that provide abortions.

The state requires providers to dispose of aborted fetuses “in a humane manner.” There’s no further definition of “humane,” and it’s not entirely clear how Ohio’s health department has been enforcing the regulation.

According to Planned Parenthood and Ohio’s health department, Planned Parenthood has never violated the rule.

Republican Attorney General Mike DeWine believes otherwise. He’s criticized Planned Parenthood for disposing of fetal remains in landfills.

Planned Parenthood calls the report’s allegations “inflammatory” and says it follows Ohio law.

Ohio lawmakers, state officials and a federal judge have been taking a closer look at the disposal regulation, which Ohio announced last week it wasn’t enforcing.
