Lacking Griffin Lutz, the Bulldogs offense struggled in their matchup against the Wellston Golden Rockets. The lack of offensive production allowed the Golden Rockets to constantly pressure the ball carrier, forcing 21 Athens turnovers in Wellston’s 84-68 victory.

Wellston utilized its 3-point shooting ability to break open the game; a tactic the team has used in many of its games this season. The Rockets shot 8 for 18 from behind the arc and consistently stopped Athens runs with big threes.

Braydon Womeldorf performed well for the Golden Rockets, scoring 24 points, shooting 3 for 3 from downtown.

With Lutz out of the lineup, Dalton Cozart handled the majority of the Bulldogs’ ball handling. Cozart lacked Lutz’s numbers, totaling no assists, but still contributed 13 points on the night. Logan Maxfield helped out for the Bulldogs adding 11 points while playing strong defense throughout the night.

When the Bulldogs began to pull close in the third quarter- closing the scoring gap from 18 to 9 in two minutes- the Rockets managed to expose the Bulldogs weakness, free throws. The Bulldogs shot just 14 for 26 from the free throw, with only two players going 2 for 2 from the stripe.

The Athens Bulldogs fell from second place in the TVC Ohio down to fourth place in the conference. However, Athens plays Meigs Jan. 30, allowing the Bulldogs the chance to move back into TVC Ohio contention.
