CHAGRIN FALLS, Ohio (AP) – A state environmental agency says a northeast Ohio elementary school has an unacceptable level of lead in its drinking water.

Superintendent Robert Hunt says the Chagrin Falls School District and the state Environmental Protection Agency have been looking into potential lead in the T.C. Gurney Elementary School water for months.

Hunt says he’s “frustrated” and “completely blindsided” by the development after he says the district was told in November that its water had acceptable levels.

The EPA says handwashing water is safe but that children and pregnant women should drink bottled or filtered water.

It says the levels are due to a lack of usage over the summer.

The school has decided to provide bottled drinking water to students and staff and plans to shut off drinking fountains.
