After earning their second TVC-Ohio victory, the Buckeyes went in against Vinton County confident. The Vikings, however, had another idea. The Vinton County Vikings spoiled the Nelsonville-York Buckeyes 79-47.

The game started off with Vinton County leading against Nelsonville-York 13-0 in the first five minutes of the first quarter but the Buckeyes refused to end the quarter without scoring some points. The Buckeyes quickly scored 6 points with 3 minutes left leaving them trailing behind the Vikings 16-6.

“Sometimes you just try to weather a storm, and they were blocking our shots,” coach Jay Kline said. “We knew we were playing a good basketball team, but we just had to fight through,”

After stepping up its game and scoring in the first quarter, Nelsonville-York was quick to give up the ball in the second quarter to Vinton County’s Derrick Jones. Jones rushed down the court after snatching the ball and scored 2 points with a layup for the Vikings.

Buckeye’s Hunter Edwards refused to give up without a fight. Edwards lead the Buckeyes against the Vikings with his determined spirit. Edwards scored 20 points in the game, 11 of which were in the first quarter.

“Hunter was really our only offensive option, and he stepped up and did a nice job by scoring for us” Kline said.

It was no surprise to the Buckeyes that the Vikings were going to be a tough team to beat. Derrick Jones fought hard for Vinton County in the first quarter by also leading his team with 11 points.

Though both teams put in a lot of effort into the game, only one could come on top. Vinton County led in all 4 quarters.

Nelsonville-York will play against Wellston High School on Feb. 5th, a team the Buckeyes lost to back in January. Vinton County will also play then when the Vikings travel to Alexander on February 5th.
