TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) – The federal agency in charge of maintaining Cleveland’s shipping channels is making the case again for dumping dredged sediment in Lake Erie.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says it thinks that tests show the muck and mud isn’t contaminated.

Ohio’s environmental regulators disagree.

The two sides have been locked in a long-running dispute over dumping the sediment dredged from Cleveland’s harbor into the lake.

The state’s Environmental Protection Agency sued the Army Corps last year after it said it wouldn’t dredge the shipping channel until Ohio paid to put the material in a containment facility.

Army Corps officials said this week that disposing the sediment in Lake Erie won’t hurt its water quality.
