Judge Rejects Profiling Suit Against Border Patrol in Ohio
< < Back toTOLEDO, Ohio (AP) – A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit accusing U.S. Border Patrol agents in northern Ohio of specifically targeting Hispanics.
The judge in Toledo ruled this week there is no evidence that the border patrol along Lake Erie had policies encouraging racial profiling.
Two groups that work with Hispanics in Ohio sued the border patrol over what they say was a pattern of profiling over the past six years.
They said border patrol logs show a disproportionate number of stops involving Hispanics.
U.S. Justice Department lawyers told the judge last summer that statistics don’t back up the claims of discrimination and denied that agents were profiling Hispanics.
The lawsuit focused on border agents along Lake Erie who patrol near Canada.
