A contemporary German theater movement, the free-scene in Berlin is electrically alive, yet little known to Americans. Matthew Cornish aims to shed light on free-scene performances, created by groups of theater artists who collectively tackle the silly and the serious in partially planned, partially improvised performances. Cornish, assistant professor of theater history, recently received a John C. Baker Fund award to further his research, which he will publish as a book titled Everything and Other Performance Texts from Contemporary Germany (Seagull Books), aiming to capture the elusive nature of these performances in written form for the benefit of both scholars and the public.
