CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) – The West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission has approved an increase in the maximum amount students can be awarded for the fall semester.

A statement from the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission says students can now be awarded up to $2,700 in grants for the 2016-17 academic year, which is a $100 increase.

The commission says students must submit paperwork for the Higher Education Grant Program by April 15 to be considered for the fall semester. The program offers financial aid to students based on financial need.

Commission Chancellor Paul Hill says anyone who plans to attend college in the fall is encouraged to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, which also determines whether they are eligible for a state grant.
