Man Who Shot At Police Before Being Hit By SUV Pleads Guilty
< < Back toNEWARK, Ohio (AP) – A man accused of shooting a central Ohio policeman in the arm before being struck by a vehicle driven by a different officer has been sentenced to 20 years in prison on charges including assault of an officer.
Randall Hutchison entered an Alford plea Monday, meaning the 29-year-old Newark man doesn’t admit guilt but concedes prosecutors had evidence to convict him.
Hutchison told the judge he didn’t want to shoot anyone and regrets what happened.
The November 2014 confrontation started with an attempted home search. Police say Hutchison fled, shot one officer and raised his gun toward another, who then defensively ran into him with a sport utility vehicle. Hutchison was in critical condition for weeks.
The Columbus Dispatch reports the SUV driver was cleared of possible wrongdoing.
