Duo Unprepared, featuring Ohio University professors and musicians Roger Braun and Andre Gribou, will make rare appearances in Athens at 8 p.m. on Oct. 21 and 22 for free performances of completely improvised music.
The concerts—“Duo Unprepared: Improvised Music for Pianos and Percussion Plus Live Scoring of Short Films”—will be free and open to the public at Central Venue located at 26 E. Carpenter Street in Athens. The performances will include a new Duo Unprepared project improvising live scoring to short films The Employment, The Cub and Destino, the recently released collaboration between Salvador Dali and Walt Disney. Additionally, they will perform the opening scenes of Francis Ford Coppola’s masterpiece, Apocalypse Now.
During Saturday’s performance, special guest Russell Burge, jazz vibraphonist from the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, will join Duo Unprepared.
Braun and Gribou have worked together in a wide variety of musical styles since 2000 – from completely improvised music to classical, jazz, and world music. As their affinity for performing improvised music grew, they began to collaborate with other artists including world-renown improvisational dancers, Chris Aiken and Angie Hauser.
Braun and Gribou have appeared on numerous concert series including Washington D.C.’s Dance Place performance series, the University of Michigan, Ohio University, and Denison University. With frequent collaborator, percussionist, Anthony Di Sanza, they recently performed in Chateau d’Oex, Switzerland at the 2015 International Society for Improvised Music Conference and a tour of Wisconsin Universities.
