Kassidy Betzing and Devin Humphreys combined to score 27 points as the Meigs Lady Marauders defeated the Athens Lady Bulldogs 60-38; picking up their fourth straight win in the process.

It was an ugly start for the Lady Marauders as they commited three consecutive turnovers on their first three possessions. The game appeared to slow down as tenacious defensive led to good offense and a 16-6 lead after the 1st quarter.

The offensive momentum carried into the 2nd quarter as the Lady Marauders, after conceding two buckets, went on a 13-0 run sparked by three straight Betzing three pointers. After a rather ugly end to the half, seeing both teams in the double bonus, Meigs had a commanding 32-14 lead going into the locker room. Betzing and Humphreys combined to score more points (15) than the entire Athens squad.

Athens refused to go away easy however as the Lady Bulldogs opened the second half on a 7-2 run. Humphreys silenced the run and ended all Athens momentum after an offensive rebound and a put back layup. Humphreys would finish the night with 13 points and one rebound shy of a double-double.

The dominant duo of Betzing and Humphreys found the third side to the Meigs offensive triangle as junior Madison Hendricks put up 11 points on a prefect 5-5 shooting. Not only was she a force on the offensive end, but a pest defensively. She tallied four steals that often led to a Meigs fast break and score.

Besides the myriad of shots that the Lady Marauders made, the ones they didn’t seemed to have no impact in the game. The Lady Marauders collected 15 offensive rebounds, making it difficult for Athens to even touch the ball for minutes at a time. Its hard to win if a team doesn’t have the ball and the Lady Bulldogs found that out the hard way.

Meigs will look to make it five in a row as the host River Valley on Thursday Feb. 2nd. Athens will welcome Vinton County on the same night and hope to make senior night a special one.
