Football season may be several months away but spring workouts for Ohio Football have already begun. Along with the new Ohio players, three new coaches will be entering the program.

De’Angelo Smith and Pete Germano are joining as defensive assistant coaches and Ryan Bainbridge has been named the Director of Player Personnel and High School Relations, the team announced.

Smith will coach cornerbacks under defensive coordinator Jimmy Burrow and Germano will coach the defensive line.

Smith previously served as a defensive assistant at Michigan State and played in the NFL. Smith spent three years with the Spartans, the past two as a graduate assistant dealing primarily with defensive backs.

In 2009, Smith, a former cornerback and safety at Cincinnati, played in seven games for the Detroit Lions after being drafted in the fifth round by the Dallas Cowboys.

This is a homecoming for Germano who previously spent 11 years in Athens before serving as the defensive line coach at Fresno State for the past five seasons. Germano coached the defensive line for three years in his first stop in Athens and also coached tight ends and outside linebackers. He also coordinated the Bobcats’ recruiting efforts for eight seasons.

Bainbridge has been with the team for the past two seasons as an operations assistant and has helped the team with recruiting, high school camps and video. Bainbridge was Ohio Volleyball’s student manager for three years and dealt with recruiting, video and data in that role. He has also worked with both Ohio men’s and women’s basketball.

Former Ohio defensive line coach Jesse Williams and former cornerbacks coach Anthony Perkins left for similar positions with the Kansas Jayhawks and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, respectively, in February. Williams had been at Ohio since 2012 and Perkins joined in 2015.

The former director of player personnel and high school relations, Eric Kohr, left shortly after National Signing Day.

Ohio’s spring practices will begin on Wednesday, March 14 at 8 a.m. After that, the Bobcats will have 14 additional spring practices throughout March and into mid-April.
