Naylan Yates snagged the Waverly ball and passed behind his back to Derick Jones.  Jones passed back to Yates for the easy layup and a Vinton County 29-20 lead.

Vinton County was quicker, stronger and bigger than Waverly and used all those advantages in the Vikings’ 88-66 victory.

Waverly stayed in early and were down only one point after the first quarter.  The Vikings, though, took of care of business in the second.

Vinton County outscored Waverly 27-8 in the second quarter.  Vinton County let Waverly know the Vikings took over when Jake Speakman passed to Eli Griffith on a fast break for a dunk.  The crowd erupted and stayed loud until the buzzer.

Speakman’s assist to Griffith was one of 11 assists on the night.  Speakman also had 10 points for a double-double on the night.

The depth for the Vikings also took care of Waverly.  Vinton County could get contributions from the bench where Waverly could barely get help from the starters.  Cade Marquez and Trey Rigsby, Waverly’s only seniors, provided all the offense for the Tigers.

Jones led the way for Vinton County with 22 points and Yates followed right behind with 20 of his own.  Even with these two accounting for nearly half of Vinton County’s points, the rest of the team still made an impact.

Vinton County advanced to the district finals where the Vikings will see Unioto who advanced after a defeat of Logan Elm.
