NELSONVILLE, Ohio — Brody Rodgers led the Athens Bulldogs to victory against the Nelsonville York Buckeyes Wednesday smacking two home runs to go along with four runs batted in.

“Brody’s been locked in the last couple games. Seeing the ball well and making good decisions. His approach has been really good” Athens head coach Chris Stewart said.

Rodgers was also dominate on the mound, yielding only two runs through six innings while striking out nine. Rodgers got into trouble early in the second inning when he loaded the bases. But he  battled through adversity to strike out the side.

“He had the one inning that sort of turned into a character-building experience for him,” Stewart said. “He was able to work his way out of that, giving up only one run.”

Bulldogs win 14-2

The 12-1 Bulldogs stay atop the TVC  with a 14-2 victory against the 6-4 Nelsonville-York Buckeyes at Blackburn Field.

Southpaw Hunter Dobbs pitched well for the Buckeyes, but couldn’t keep the Bulldogs’ offense quiet for long. Athens generated runs once the team got aggressive on the bases. The Bulldogs stole home twice while runners were on first and third. That forced NY’s infielders to commit two errors that resulted in two runs. The Buckeyes played catch-up for the rest of the game.

Athens collected seven stolen bases against Nelsonville-York. The score was 5-1 in favor of Athens when the Buckeyes got two hits in the fifth to cut the deficit by three runs. But the home team’s rally didn’t last long as Rodgers homered in the top of the fifth to give his team a 9-2 lead. Rodgers wasn’t done yet, he smacked another homer in the next inning to extend the lead 12-2. The game ended in a mercy rule when the Bulldogs put up two more runs in the top half of the sixth inning.
