FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) – Hundreds of public workers have rallied at the Kentucky Capitol in opposition to a proposed bill that would eventually close the state’s pension system in favor of a 401(k)-style retirement plan.

The “Fund our Pensions” rally comes as Republican lawmakers signal shaky support for the bill unveiled last week. Senate Majority Floor Leader Damon Thayer says Republicans have the votes to pass the bill. But Republican House Speaker Jeff Hoover indicated the bill would have to be changed before it could pass in the House of Representatives.

Joe Cope traveled about 80 miles from Rockcastle County to attend the rally. The 17-year high school English teacher says he is worried about his family’s future. The proposal would cut 3 percent from his paycheck each year.
