The Nelsonville-York Lady Buckeyes coach Bob Cassady summed up the game with one quick and simple statement: “It was ugly”.

It was a physical matchup between these two teams, as bodies were hitting the floor all night long. Turnovers were plentiful for both sides thanks to physicality and tough defense.

With fouls not really being called like the players would have wanted to, frustrations were high throughout the whole game. Even after all these frustrations, the N-Y Lady Buckeyes were still able to pull out the 35-28 win over the Wellston Lady Rockets.

The Lady Buckeyes (2-1) are looking to lean on their star senior point guard Jessie Addis this season, and they leaned on her scoring for most of tonight’s game.

Addis scored 13 of her teams 18 points in the first half, and would finish the game with a fantastic stat line: 17 points, 5 rebounds, and 6 steals.

It was a very bad shooting night from the Lady Buckeyes, as they shot 10-45 from the field as a team. One of their key players, junior forward Mary-Kate McCulloch, couldn’t buy a bucket all night long, as she shot 1-11 from the field.

Their defense was the key to this game as they forced 20 Lady Rocket turnovers to get out on the fastbreak. They also held their opponent to under 30 points for the second straight game, showing off a defense that could help them win a ton of games this season.

The Wellston Lady Rockets (1-2) struggled to score and get easy buckets, as they couldn’t get past the man to man defense all night long. Even though they were only down by 8 with over three minutes left in the game, they couldn’t create turnovers or force shots which lead to the starters being pulled with only two minutes left.

The Nelsonville-York Lady Buckeyes will look to continue their good defense and improve their struggling offense in their game on Saturday the 9th against the Trimble Lady Tomcats.
