CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) – Gov. Jim Justice is calling for pay raises for West Virginia’s jail guards, teachers and other workers in the next fiscal year with the state’s economy and tax revenues now on the upswing.

Addressing the Legislature on Wednesday evening, the now Republican governor tells the GOP-controlled House and Senate the state isn’t facing budget deficits now.

His staff says none are forecast for the next six years.

In his second State of the State Address, Justice proposes cutting taxes on industrial inventory, machinery and equipment by $134 million, which would require approvals from the Legislature and voters.

He also wants to increase state tourism promotion spending from $6 million to $20 million in the fiscal year that starts July 1 and boost Commerce Department economic development spending by $35 million.
