CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) – West Virginia lawmakers have agreed to end the state’s film production tax credit following a two-hour debate in the House of Delegates and a January audit that showed the credit produced little economic benefit for the state.

However, several delegates argue that movies and television shows made here showcase West Virginia, and the credits capped at $5 million annually apply only when companies generate economic activity, employ people and spend money locally.

Critics say West Virginia lacks the needed infrastructure and much larger credits offered filmmakers by other states and that films like the Oscar-nominated documentary “Heroin(e)” were made without that tax help.

The bill passed the House 54-42. The Senate approved it 28-2 on Monday.

Gov. Jim Justice is expected to sign it.
