The Athens Bulldogs used a third quarter spark to secure an 80-48 win over the Nelsonville-York Buckeyes Friday night at Nelsonville-York High School. The Bulldogs (8-9, 6-3 TVC Ohio) dominated the entire second half and the Buckeyes (5-12, 1-9) were never able to recover.

The game was back and forth for the entire first half, with neither team leading by more than six points. With the game tied at 27 with 2:15 to play in the first half, Athens scored six unanswered points and looked like they were starting to pull away.

However, a quick five Buckeye points including a Jonathan Richards block leading to Justin Perry breakaway layup say the Buckeyes cut the Bulldogs’ lead to just one at the half.

Athens came sprinting out the gate in the second half.

The Bulldogs outscored the Buckeyes 28-4 in the third quarter and never looked back. Athens was able to adjust to N-Y’s zone defense and exploited it in every way possible, scoring from both inside and outside.

They moved the ball around effectively, finishing with 20 team assists to N-Y’s 11. The Bulldogs also dominated on defense, forcing 18 Buckeye turnovers.

Leading the way for Athens was Logan Maxfield with 23 points and five assists. Justin Hughes also chipped in with 15 points, shooting a perfect 7-7 from the field.

Justin Perry led the Buckeyes with 13 points and five assists, while Brayden Allen added 10 points and two steals.

The Bulldogs have now won five straight and will look to continue that momentum when they play Wellston (10-6, 6-3 TVC Ohio) at home on Tuesday. The Buckeyes will look to snap a seven-game losing streak when head to River Valley (4-13, 2-7) on Tuesday.
