GREENWOOD, W.Va. (AP) – Health officials in West Virginia say two jail inmates have been diagnosed with hepatitis A.

The inmates were diagnosed Friday while four other inmates were showing hepatitis A symptoms at the North Central Regional Jail in Doddridge County.

Employees from three county health departments administered hepatitis A vaccines Saturday to about 850 inmates at the jail.

State health officials say there have been 1,166 cases of hepatitis A in West Virginia. About half have occurred in Kanawha County.

Hepatitis A is a communicable disease of the liver caused by a virus. It is usually transmitted person-to-person or by consuming contaminated food or water.
