PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (AP) – Republicans have chosen former House of Delegates member Tom Azinger to replace Frank Deem on the Nov. 6 general election ballot.

The appointment Thursday came a day after Deem, who was 90, died at a Parkersburg hospital.

Wood County GOP Chairman Rob Cornelius told The Parkersburg News and Sentinel that the decision to appoint Azinger was unanimous among the 12 executive committee members.

Cornelius said it was necessary to update the ballot as soon as possible so changes could be made for absentee, early and electronic voting methods in Wood County.

There will be a separate appointment process to fill Deem’s seat for the remainder of his term, which ends in January.
