‘Intensity’ is one word that could describe both teams tonight at Trimble High School. The Waterford Lady Wildcats came into their first game of the season against the Lady Tomcats looking to start off on a positive note. Despite a tough gauntlet to get through, the Lady Wildcats came out on top 58-44.

The Lady Wildcats showed what they were made of throughout the game with the help of Rachael Adams, who scored 12 points in the first half alone. Most of the early success came from the capitalization of errors made by Trimble and utilizing a very strong press.

Despite the offensive start, Waterford’s issues with defensive rotations allowed The Lady Tomcats to score 25 points in the first half, which kept them in the game to continue to fight. Coach Jerry Close said, “This was our first game out, a lot of nerves, but the biggest thing is, we have to learn to trust each other more.”

Trusting each other seemed to come naturally as the game moved onward. Waterford’s ability to keep the shots falling came especially from the intensity shown throughout the game by Adams and Cara Taylor. They both combined for 12 steals, following up with great finishes in the paint. Waterford lead 33-25 at the end of the second quarter.

In the third quarter, Lady Wildcat, Riley Schweikert, stepped up to help lead her team on. Schweikert ended with 13 points, most of which came from her impressive work finishing in the paint.

Coach Close continued to praise the intensity saying, “We didn’t know how well the press would work, we were down, but I thought that the kids adjusted well.” Trimble’s Emily Young put pressure on the Lady Wildcats scoring 13 points, adding more fuel to the fire.

Helping to close out the game, Adams finished with four assists allowing her fellow teammates to put the final points on the board and sealing the deal for the Lady Wildcats. Coach Close said, “[Rachael] doesn’t like any attention, she likes to make everybody better, and that’s what she does.”

Waterford will next host the Southern Lady Tornadoes on Monday, with the Lady Tomcats hosting Belpre next Thursday.
