The public is invited to the Dairy Barn Arts Center on Thursday, February 28, 2019, 6 p.m., for a very special event: Athens Voices: Spoken & Heard, a spoken word performance set to complement the biennial Athens Voices USA 2019 fine art exhibition, currently on display at The Barn. The evening will feature 19 Athens-based poets and musicians, speaking and singing “sense of place” poems and songs, giving the audience a preview of the work to be included in an anthology, Essentially Athens, a printed collection to be published by Athens Poet Laureate, Kari Gunter-Seymour for the city of Athens, Summer 2019.

“I am so excited about this performance,” says Gunter-Seymour, curator of the event. “This line up of exceptionaly talented performers is made up of our very own family, friends, and neighbors–some who rarely share their voices in public–all in one place, at one time. I wonder how many of us even realize how many gifted writers we have right here in our home town? This is a one-of-a-kind, not to be missed opportunity.”

Gunter-Seymour points out that the submission period for the anthology, Essentially Athens, is open through March 15, 2019, and encourages all age groups to submit. Interested writers should email (1) poem OR (1) song OR one (1) short story/essay MAXIMUM 1200 WORDS as a WORD.doc or .docx attachment to athenpoetlaureate@gmail.com, along with an 80 word, third person bio. One submission per person. All of the work must have an Athens “sense of place” theme. Writers under the age of 18 must also submit a document of parental consent for publication.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m., spoken word begins at 6 p.m. in the Sauber Gallery. There will be a cash bar. Books and CDs from the evenings’ performers will be for sale immediately after the performance. Dairy Barn Art Center Executive Director, Jane Forrest Redfern suggests that guests plan to come early to view the Athens Voices USA 2019 fine art exhibition before the performance begins.
