WHEELING, W.Va. (AP) – A private West Virginia college in financial crisis says it is cutting more than half its programs next year.

The Intelligencer reports Wheeling Jesuit University offered about 30 academic programs this year; next fall, it will offer only 11. Officials said sports programs will remain.

The university said in a statement on Thursday that the programs it is keeping “reflect the best intersection of WJU’s deep expertise, student demand and financial sustainability.” It will continue to operate under a declaration of financial exigency.

Officials say they will work with all returning students to make sure they are able to fulfill their degrees.

In 2017, the university sold its property to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston to address long-term debt.

Wheeling Jesuit has an enrollment of about 1,150.
