This Thanksgiving members of the Athens County Running Club will be hosting their 11th annual Turkey Trot 5k fun run/walk. The goal of the event is to raise money and canned goods which will be donated to the Athens Catholic Community Food Pantry.

“I had been to other cities that have a Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving,” said Scott Welsh of the Athens Country Running Club. “I thought it would be a great way to bring the community together for a great cause of raising funds for the needy.”

The event starts at 8 am on November 28 at the West State ball fields, and the running path will be down and back along the bike trail.

With a typical turnout of 150-200 runners, the Turkey Trot welcomes everyone, from college students to younger children and extended family that may be visiting in town.

“We have a turn around spot to make it a 5K, but I always tell the runners it is a “FUN” run.  If they want to go farther or shorter they can, we don’t time them or anything like that.” Welsh said.

Although online registration is now closed, people who are interested in running may still show up on the day of with a monetary donation or canned goods.

“Having a lot of families together is great. Also putting those that are in need in our minds and hopefully carrying on the giving well after the Holidays.” Welsh said.
