ALEXANDER, Ohio- The “Turn it Gold Classic” brought us a TVC-Ohio battle between the Athens Bulldogs (1-4, 0-1) and the Meigs Marauders (1-1, 1-0)

The Marauders girls basketball team was able to turn it gold with their solid defense and strong shooting performance as they defeated the Bulldogs 51-43.

The game was back-and-forth with the first quarter ending in a 12-11 Athens lead.

Laura Manderick led the team on both sides of the ball for the Bulldogs. Offensively, Manderick finished the game with a team-high 20 points. Defensively, Manderick tallied three steals.

Meigs was able to keep it close with their hot start from behind the arc. Bre Lilly was a key component to the hot shooting. Lily finished shooting four of six from behind the arc with three three-pointers in the first half.

One of the main components that allowed Athens to hold a lead was excessive fouling from Meigs. In the frist half, Meigs suffered eight personal fouls. In the second half, Meigs ended up with 13 personal fouls.

However, the Bulldogs failed to convert on a majority of their free throws. Athens shot 16-35 from the charity stripe.

Despite having many fouls, the Marauder defense stayed aggressive. They forced 13 total turnovers and had 6 steals. The big name on defense was Mallory Hawley who had four steals and five blocks, with a couple being chase down blocks.

“I think we played better as a team overall,” Hawley said after the game.

After a strong start to the game, the wheels fell off for Athens as the Marauders never looked back. Athens struggled to find the bottom of the net down the stretch. The Bulldogs especially struggled to match Meigs’ hot three point shooting from the first half.

The struggle to find the bottom of the net and the offensive struggles allowed Meigs to avoid a late game comeback.

Athens will look to bounce back as they travel to Wellston on Dec. 9.
