POMEROY, Ohio- The Alexander Lady Spartans went to Pomeroy to face off against the Meigs Lady Marauders for their fourth game within the span of a week Thursday night, securing the victory 54-43.

Alexander came in with a four game losing streak to stiff competition, looking to change the mindset in the locker room and getting back to winning ways.

“We’ve played four games in eight days,” said Alexander girls head coach Jeff Grinstead. “All four games were against D-II and D-I schools that were all very good, and it just wore on us to be honest.”

In the first half, the Lady Spartans came out firing on all cylinders, playing solid defense and superbly facilitating the offense to get open looks for easy baskets.

Alexander Sophomore Marlee Grinstead caught fire in the first half, scoring 13 points; nearly as many points as Meigs’ entire squad, as they went in with a comfortable 29-14 halftime lead.

In the second half, the Lady Marauders would not go down without a fight. The reason why the game stayed close was because of Meigs sophomore Mallory Hawley. She carried the load, leading the team in points, assists, blocks and steals.

It was a star-studded battle between the two number 32’s, but in the end it was Grinstead and the Lady Spartans that got the last laugh. She finished with 21 points, seven rebounds, and five assists, as Alexander came away with the victory 54-43.

Alexander got a much needed win and improve to 9-7 overall and 6-2 in conference play. Coach Grinstead reflected on the positive takeaways the squad can take from this game.

“Getting a win is huge for us tonight,” said Grinstead. “We’ve been working on getting back to just old Spartans basketball. No one is going to work harder than us.”

The Lady Spartans and Lady Marauders hit the court again on Monday, as Alexander hosts Wellston and Meigs goes on the road to face River Valley.
