Saturday, February 29, the Ohio University Latino Student Union will host the third Fiesta Latina at The Union (18 W Union St.) to help raise money to fight against Chagas Disease.

“I think it helps unite the Latino community at Ohio University. It’s also awesome because we use the funds we get from it to help build houses in Ecuador to help fight against Chagas Disease.” said Latino Student Union President, Rosa Avina. “Although the disease can be managed, it’s a very painful recovery and it can be prevented by having a home that prevents these insects from coming in.”

Chagas disease is a very common ailment in areas of the world where the triatomine (also known as kissing or vampire bugs) are abundant, mostly in Mexico, South America, and Central America. Triatomines transmit Trypanosoma cruzi, a protozoan parasite, in their feces. The parasite causes Chagas disease, which can be deadly if left untreated, and is very painful even if treated quickly.

The event is a great way for Latino students to come together to not only have fun and celebrate their culture but to also raise money for a cause they believe in.

This is super important for me because music plays a large part in Latino cultures. It’s one of many things that helps unite us as Latinos. I think this event is important because it’s fun, and it unites all of the Athens community for a good cause,” said Avina. “I also just enjoy having a safe space to just have fun.”

Fiesta Latina will take place Saturday, February 29 at 9 p.m. There will be a cover charge of $3 for those 21 and up and $5 for those 18 and up. All are welcome to come out and celebrate the music.

“Just expect lots of dancing, and people trying to talk to you,” said Avina. “I love talking to folks and I enjoy letting them know what kind of impact this event has. It’s honestly a great event and everyone always has a fun time.”
