The 66th COVID-Related Death Has Been Reported In Athens County, Along With 85 New Cases For Oct. 1

ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) — Athens County has now had 66 total deaths related to COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic after one was added to the total Friday. The county also has now had 7,308 total cases of COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic after 85 new cases were reported for the same day.

The Ohio Department of Health confirmed the death and cases on Oct. 1, 2021.

Analysis of ODH data indicates the death involved a person in their 50s.

According to ODH data, the cases involved 40 people 0-19, 24 people 20-24, six people 60-69, four people 30-39, four people 40-49, three people 50-59, three people 70-79 and one person 80+.

An additional case involving a person in their 30s required hospitalization. According to the data, 258 people in Athens County have been hospitalized due to complications related to this coronavirus since the start of the pandemic.

There are 728 known active cases in the county as of Friday and 6,514 recovered cases, according to ODH.

A total of 47.14% of the county has started the vaccination process and 43.96% has completed it, according to ODH.

Anyone experiencing respiratory symptoms is asked to call their primary care physician, urgent care, or emergency department before arriving for care to let them know that they believe they are experiencing symptoms related to COVID-19 virus.

Friday at 2 p.m., the Ohio Department of Health announced 1,420,206confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 statewide after 6,234 cases were reported in the last 24 hours. There have been 73,386 hospitalizations and 22,273 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

ODH makes the following recommendations to protect yourself from illness:

• Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; dry hands with a clean towel or air dry hands.
• Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer when soap and water are unavailable.
• Cover your mouth with a tissue or sleeve when sneezing or coughing. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
• Stay home when you are sick.
• Avoid contact with people who are sick.
