One COVID-related death has been reported in Athens County, along with 179 new cases for Jan. 21

ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) — Athens County has now had 107 total deaths related to COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic after one was added to the total Friday. The county also has now had 12,451 total cases of COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic after 179 new cases were added the same day.

The Ohio Department of Health confirmed the numbers on Jan. 21, 2022.

Analysis of ODH data indicates the death involved a person 80 years of age or older.

According to ODH data, the cases involved 63 people 20-29, 58 people 0-19, 21 people 40-49, 15 people 30-39, nine people 60-69, six people 70-79, five people 50-59 and two people 80+.

Two already confirmed cases required hospitalization for people 19 or younger. According to the data, 326 people in Athens County have been hospitalized due to complications related to this coronavirus since the start of the pandemic.

There are 3,203 known active cases in the county as of Friday and 9,141 recovered cases, according to ODH.

A total of 52.64% of the county has started the vaccination process and 48.96% has completed it, according to ODH. There have also been 15,991 additional doses administered.

Anyone experiencing respiratory symptoms is asked to call their primary care physician, urgent care, or emergency department before arriving for care to let them know that they believe they are experiencing symptoms related to COVID-19 virus.

Friday at 2 p.m., the Ohio Department of Health announced 19,697 confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 statewide were reported in the last 24 hours. There were also 476 hospitalizations, 37 ICU admissions and 742 deaths reported in the same time frame.

ODH makes the following recommendations to protect yourself from illness:

  • Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; dry hands with a clean towel or air dry hands.
  • Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer when soap and water are unavailable.
  • Cover your mouth with a tissue or sleeve when sneezing or coughing. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Avoid contact with people who are sick.
