94 new COVID-19 cases were reported in Athens County for May 19-26

ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) — Athens County has now had 15,017 total cases of COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic after 94 additional cases were reported since last week’s update.

The Ohio Department of Health confirmed the numbers on May 26.

According to ODH data, the cases involved 15 people 0-19, 11 people 20-29, 13 people 30-39, nine people 40-49, seven people 50-59, eight people 60-69, four people 70-79 and one person 80 or older.

According to the data, 347 people in Athens County have been hospitalized due to complications related to this coronavirus since the start of the pandemic.

There are 348 known active cases in the county as of Thursday and 14,669 recovered cases, according to ODH.

A total of 52.82% of the county has started the vaccination process and 49.38% has completed it, according to ODH. There have also been 17,428 first boosters and 2,647 second boosters administered.

Anyone experiencing respiratory symptoms is asked to call their primary care physician, urgent care, or emergency department before arriving for care to let them know that they believe they are experiencing symptoms related to COVID-19 virus.

Thursday at 2 p.m., the Ohio Department of Health announced 19,536 confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 statewide were reported since last week’s update. There were also 473 hospitalizations, 32 ICU admissions and 40 deaths reported in the same time period.

ODH makes the following recommendations to protect yourself from illness:

  • Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; dry hands with a clean towel or air dry hands.
  • Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer when soap and water are unavailable.
  • Cover your mouth with a tissue or sleeve when sneezing or coughing. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Avoid contact with people who are sick.
