NEWARK, Ohio (WOUB) — The Newark Catholic Green Wave were a team of destiny in 2021. All-GG Quarterback Cole Canter and head coach, Ryan Aiello, led the team to a State Championship appearance, where they unfortunately lost to a juggernaut in Marion Local.

Both Canter and Aiello, as well as All-GG Linebacker, Elijah Wallace, were supposed to be stepping away from the program at season’s end.

However, after some troubles with trying to hire a replacement for Aiello in the offseason, the program welcomed the highly touted coach back into the program to man the ship once more.

Coach Aiello will be entering his fifth season with Newark Catholic, where some younger names are looking to step up for the squad.

This begins with sophomore starting quarterback, Miller Hutchison. Hutchison sat behind Canter in the depth chart last season, where he learned valuable information from the senior.

The Green Wave have a tough road ahead but are eager to maintain their success in the Licking County League Cardinal Division.

Although Newark Catholic made it all the way to the Division VII State Championship last season, they failed to win a conference title, finishing second behind the Heath Bulldogs, who served the Green Wave their only regular season loss.

Newark Catholic will look to avenge that loss and start another dominant campaign on Saturday, August 20th, where they will welcome a tough non-conference opponent in Bishop Ready for a Week 1 matchup at White Field.
