Unioto bounces back from week 7 heartbreaker with huge win over Paint Valley

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio, (WOUB) – In an Important Conference matchup in the SVC, the Unioto Shermans defeated the Paint Valley Bearcats 42-17.

The Shermans did not start this game off well. QB Newton Hoops was intercepted by Carson Boggs. The Shermans defense got the ball right back after Cody Tuttle recovered a fumble.

The Sherman’s on the next drive used the ground game with Matt Griffin, who found the endzone on a one-yard rush making the score 7-0. Down by seven and with their first drive ending with a turnover, the Bearcats needed to put a good drive together and they did. The Bearcats used the ground game with a heavy dose of running back Braylon Robertson. Robertson found the endzone on a one-yard carry to make the score 7-7.

The second quarter started with a kickoff miscue by the Shermans that resulted in a fumble recovery for the Bearcats. The Bearcats used this great field position to put together a good drive that ended with an eight-yard touchdown run from QB Caven Cooper to make the score 14-7. The next drive the Sherman’s were determined to get back in the endzone and they leaned on their receiver Casey Dray but in the run game and Matt Griffin. The Sherman’s were able to score with a 14-yard touchdown run from Dray making the score 14-14. With a minute left in the second the Bearcats were able to put together a drive to put their kicker in a great position to try and get three points. Dak Estep’s kick was good making the score 14-17 at halftime.

The Shermans started out the third quarter strong as they leaned on the ground game from Running back Corbin Demitt and Matt Griffin. Griffin found the endzone to give the Shermans the lead 21-17. The Sherman’s defense was able to force a quick three and out on the next possession. With momentum on the Sherman’s side on their next possession Casey Dray took his carry 70 yards to the endzone making the score 28-17. The Sherman’s defense held strong for the remainder of the quarter.

Starting the fourth out the Sherman’s used the ground game again with their combination of backs to pound the Bearcat defense. Matt Griffin was able to find the endzone again on a 26-yard run making the score 35-17. Even up by three possessions the Sherman’s defense was determined not to give up any points as they were able to force a turnover on downs. Sherman’s Running back Corbin Demitt was able to find the end zone with a 31 yard rushing touchdown making the score 42-17.

Neither team scored for the remainder of the game making the final score 42-17.

Coach Matt Hoops talked about the improvement his team made going into this game.

“Obviously it was a tough loss last week at Zane Trace, but we had a really good week of practice so that shows maturity by our guys,” Hoops said. “We have two league games left, take those one at a time and continue to clean some things up and just be playing as well as we can going into the postseason.”

Unioto (7-1, 4-1 in conference)  will look to build off this win as they will host Southeastern next week.

Paint Valley (5-3, 4-1 in conference) will look to bounce back as they will be home against Zane Trace next week.
