STEWART, Ohio (WOUB) – The Federal Hocking lancers defeated the Alexander Spartans 40-37 in an unexpected edge-of-your-seat thriller.

Once the ball tipped off Federal Hocking got off to a slow start trailing in the first three minutes of the game.

But by the end of the first quarter, the Lancers seemed to be getting in their groove following a strong early scoring performance by Takira Walker.

In the second quarter, the mistakes kept building for the Lancers with more missed field goals and a lack of offensive boards which allowed the Spartans to stay in the game. The Lancers headed into halftime up 21-14.

Once the second half started it was all the Lancers. They came out with more energy and hustle that helped expand their lead to nine going into the third quarter.

The Spartans continued to battle as they only trailed by three or four points throughout most of the third quarter. The Lancers had multiple turnovers and three-pointers from Kaylee Johnson were key.

The Lancers expanded their lead by ten in the fourth quarter. Walker’sled the lancers with 18 points and two threes.

But in the final two minutes, the Spartans finally found the step they were missing all game. They forced the Lancers into tough shots and made them consistently turn the ball over.

With three seconds left, the Lancers after a called jump ball prepared to inbound the ball. Forward Kendall Snedden in the final seconds of the game expected a full-court throw down the court to drain the clock.

The clock did not run leaving two seconds for the Spartans to take one final shot. As the Spartans inbounded the ball they were swarmed by the Lancer’s defense and no shot was taken.

The Lancers now get ready for Saturday in a battle against the Ironton Rock Hill Redmen at 1 p.m.
