WOUB is ready to celebrate the changing of the seasons with our 2023 Spring Showcase pledge event! We’ve provided a guide to highlights from the upcoming programming below.

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 24:

9 p.m. – Great Performances ‘The Magic of Spirituals”

Glimpse behind the curtain at opera stars Kathleen Battle and Jessye Norman’s famed 1990 concert.

 

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 25:

11 a.m. – Exploring Ireland with Michael

The hidden treasures and majestic beauty of the Emerald Isle. Encore presentation scheduled for Wednesday, March 8 at 8 p.m.

12 p.m. – America’s Home Cooking: When in Rome

Enjoy the simplicity of Roman cooking with America’s Home Cooking: When In Rome. Chris Fennimore and company will take you on a tour of authentic recipes from Rome, Italy. From a simply delicious caprese salad, to the fantastically easy beef strachetti, you’ll find that cooking authentic recipes doesn’t have to be complicated! Encore presentations scheduled for Sunday, March 5 at 12 p.m. and Wednesday, March 8 at 10:30 p.m.

2 p.m. – Billy Joel: Live at Yankee Stadium

4 p.m. – Eat to Sleep

Discover how to get better sleep by learning what and when to eat with a step-by-step program. Encore presentation scheduled for Monday, February 27 at 10:30 p.m.

5:30 p.m. – Nature ‘American Horses’

The history of the uniquely American horse breeds that helped shape our nation is showcased. Encore presentation scheduled for Wednesday, March 1 at 8 p.m.

7 p.m. – Daniel O’Donnell From Castlebar, Ireland

Join the beloved balladeer for a heartwarming concert of new songs and fan favorites from Ireland. Encore presentation scheduled for Thursday, March 9 at 8 p.m.

8:30 p.m. – Rick Steves Why We Travel

9:30 p.m. – Elvis Presley: ’68 Comeback Special

In June of 1968, Elvis taped his first television special in Burbank, California. It aired on December 3 of that same year and accomplished two things: it saved his career and showcased some of the best music of his life. Premiering on NBC, it attracted 42% of the viewing audience, was the network’s biggest ratings victory that year and the season’s top-rated show. It stands today as one of the great moments in rock music history and as a stunningly brilliant milestone in Elvis’ career. Encore presentations scheduled for Thursday, March 2 at 8 p.m.; Saturday, March 4 at 4 p.m.; and Sunday, March 5 at 11:30 p.m.

11 p.m. – Elvis Costello/ Burt Bacharach: Sessions at West 54th

Meet a match made in pop heaven, when the two legends collaborated in 1998 on Painted From Memory.

 

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 26:

12 p.m. – Aging Backwards 4: The Miracle of Flexibility with Miranda Esmonde-White

4 p.m. – Peter Frampton in Concert

Join the GRAMMY-winning guitarist for his Royal Albert Hall concert taped in November 2022.

5:30 p.m. – Memory Makeover with Daniel Amen, MD

In this program, psychiatrist and founder of Amen Clinics Dr. Daniel Amen will show you how you can improve your memory and even rescue it if it’s headed for trouble. You will discover some of the most common-and one of the most surprising-causes of memory loss and when you should be concerned. Encore presentations scheduled for Sunday, February 26 at 5:30 p.m.; Tuesday, February 28 at 10 p.m. and Monday, March 6 at 11 p.m.

7:30 p.m. – Les Miserables: The Staged Concert

Coinciding with its 35th triumphant year in London’s West End, Cameron Mackintosh produced a spectacular sell-out staged concert version at the Gielgud Theatre featuring an all-star cast including Michael Ball as Javert, Alfie Boe as Jean Valjean, Carrie Hope Fletcher as Fantine, and Matt Lucas as Thenardier. With a cast and orchestra of over 65 performers, this sensational staged concert was filmed live at the Gielgud Theatre in 2019.

11:30 p.m. – Nitty Gritty Dirt Band – The Hits, The History, & Dirt Does Dylan

Fresh off their 18-month 50th Anniversary Tour, the iconic and profoundly influential Nitty Gritty Dirt Band continues to add to their legendary status. In September 2022, the band played at the legendary Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, performing Bob Dylan songs that include “Forever Young,” as well their groundbreaking album Will the Circle Be Unbroken.

 

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 27:

9 p.m. – Rod Stewart – Live at Royal Albert Hall

Rod Stewart’s various incarnations — Rod the Mod, Rod the Rocker, Rod the Crooner — are on display in Rod Stewart – Live at Royal Albert Hall. In what amounts to a singalong with his adoring fans, the raw-voiced singer reprises selections from his long and fruitful career. Encore presentation scheduled for Sunday, March 5 at 9:30 p.m.

Join an all-star cast performing songs from the hit musicals Dreamgirls, Ain’t Misbehavin, The Color Purple, Porgy and Bess and so many more to celebrate the rich history and evolution of Black roles and voices on Broadway.

9:30 pm – John Denver’s Rocky Mountain High

In honor of the 50th anniversary of “Rocky Mountain High,” the John Denver estate is partnering with Sony Legacy to digitize the concert special John Denver’s Rocky Mountain High. Filmed in 1974 at Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheater, the concert features Denver performing in his prime at this stunning outdoor venue. Encore presentation scheduled for Saturday, March 4 at 12:30 p.m.

11 p.m. – Path to Happily Ever After with Rajiv Nagaich

What does it take to live “happily ever after” during your retirement years? How can you grow old in the home you know and love-without going broke and without burdening your family? These are the questions elder law attorney and retirement planning expert Rajiv Nagaich answers in The Path to Happily Ever After. Encore presentation scheduled for Sunday, March 5 at 4:30 p.m.

This film chronicles the iconic musician’s appearances at the Newport Folk Festival with full-length song performances, including his controversial electric set from 1965. It also features previously unseen footage, which documents the changes in Dylan’s style when he appeared at Newport in three successive years. Songs include “Blowin’ in the Wind,” “Mr. Tambourine Man,” “Like a Rolling Stone,” and “Chimes Of Freedom.”

MONDAY, MARCH 13:

8 p.m. – Our Town: Chillicothe

Chillicothe was the first capital of the state of Ohio and is known for its presence on the State of Ohio seal with a circular coat of arms that depicts a Chillicothe sunrise. The film will examine many other unique aspects and people of Chillicothe including: how it is home to the oldest newspaper west of the Allegheny Mountains; the influence of the papermaking industry; how World War I contributed to the city’s growth and its notable residents like Librarian Burton Stevenson who created an immense library system for Camp Sherman; Commander Henry Walke, a prominent naval Captain and artist during the Civil War; David Nickens, the first Black ordained minister in Ohio who helped start Chillicothe’s First Baptist Church; and Former U.S. First Lady Lucy Webb Hayes, who was the first First Lady to have a college degree.
