A Conversation With Wayne Shorter

An image of musician Wayne Shorter

This week’s edition of Excursions is dedicated to the life and work of Tenor/Soprano saxophonist/Composer Wayne Shorter, who transitioned last week in Los Angeles. Wayne Shorter was part of what is called the “hard-bop” generation, or the post-Parker era artists, who were part of a rich era that saw Jazz expand to incorporate extensions of its primary roots (African-American indigenous music-Blues & Spirituals) with other ethnic folk music (Caribbean/ S. American, Middle Eastern, etc.). However, it was Wayne’s contributions that signaled the arrival of a significant musician composer/ improvisor to the scene. Wayne Shorter not only impacted the manner in which subsequent saxophonist approached their instrument, but he also expand improvisation and composition much beyond the era in which he emerged.

Saturday’s Excursions will provide a discographic overview of Wayne’s creative arc-featuring examples of his work while playing in Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers; The Miles Davi’s Quintet; Weather Report, as well as the various projects Wayne undertook during the past 35 years. For a unique perspective, Excursions will aslo share portions of an archival conversation Art Cromwell had with Wayne prior to his performance at the historic Washington D.C. Jazz club, Blues Alley.

Please tune-in to Excursions for a unique opportunity in listening:
