ATHENS, OH – For the past three years, alumni who worked at WOUB when they were students have been giving back to WOUB to support the current student experience. They’ve given back financially and also by giving of their time and their industry connections to prepare current students to get great jobs upon graduation. Now, the work of that group has been recognized by the Ohio University Alumni Association (OUAA) and the WOUB Alumni Network has been created.

An Alumni Network is an officially recognized group of graduates of Ohio University who are brought together in a geographical location or by affinity to share a collective passion for Ohio University.  Alumni Networks are a vehicle to provide meaningful, lifetime engagement for alumni and to meet the goals as outlined by OUAA and Ohio University.

“We are thrilled for the Alumni Network designation because that means we can reach more former WOUBers using the resources of the OUAA,” said WOUB Community Engagement and Membership Manager Cheri Russo. “And the more former WOUBers we get involved, the richer the experience and opportunities for our current students.”

Russo, who graduated in 1996 and 2007, was a WOUBer herself when she was a student and will serve as the network representative. She will continue working with the WOUB Alumni Engagement Group that consists of about 50 former WOUB students to plan engagement activities and events to connect alumni and current students. Currently the group helps Russo plan for annual fundraising events, #WOUBProud Giving Tuesday and OHIO Giving Day, helped create a bi-weekly Zoom speaker series with alumni called WOUB Wednesdays, the WOUB Mentoring Program, which pairs students with alumni for one-to-one mentoring, and the WOUB Job Connection Program, where media recruiters come to campus to interview WOUB students for jobs and internships.

“The students who worked at WOUB got access to hands-on, real-world training at a professional media outlet while they were in college, which is a unique and career-building experience,” said Russo. “Their affinity for the student experience at WOUB is strong and the things they have accomplished in the last few years have already been amazing. I can’t wait to see what the future holds.”
