ATHENS, OH – Families and children in the region have the opportunity to explore STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) with WOUB Public Media’s Learning Lab. The Play & Learn Science workshop series dives into the world of science inquiry and the engineering design process!  It’s free for families and made possible by the Ohio Learns 360 project and a grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

The WOUB Learning Lab has partnered with the Bossard Memorial Library in Gallipolis to present the workshop at their library location on Spruce Street. There are four sessions in the series which will be held on October 5 and 19 and November 2 and 16. The sessions run from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Space is limited to the first 10 families to register.

PBS KIDS Family & Community Learning (FCL) is a series of workshops that engage families in active, hands-on learning experiences designed for families with children ages 3-5. The workshops use creative play and exploration to introduce kids and grown-ups to digital and tangible tools to develop knowledge, practices, and perspectives. Through child-led activities and experiences, the workshops aim to foster collaboration, communication, and problem-solving skills among family members.

“Children are innately curious and creative,” said Childhood/Elementary Education Specialist Lisa Kinnard. “They want to make sense of the world around them. The grown-ups in children’s lives have an important role to play in supporting the development of the skills and practices that will allow a child’s curiosity to flourish.”

The FCL workshops are an opportunity for families to play and learn together, while demonstrating for grown-ups the best practices in guiding playful learning at home.

“Families that attend all four sessions will be entered into a drawing for a Lenovo tablet,” said Kinnard.

To register, contact Kinnard by email at kinnarde@woub.org or by phone at 740-593-0359.
