PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (WOUB)- Portsmouth upends Chesapeake 28-6.

The Chesapeake Panthers came into Portsmouth with a record of 3-3 and 7th in the Ohio Valley Conference standings. The Portsmouth Trojans held a record of 3-3 as well, but their 2-1 conference record put them in 4th place in the OVC.

Both teams needed a win to rise in the conference.

This game started off with the Panthers getting the ball in their own territory. Three straight runs gained the Panthers only one yard, and they were forced to punt.

Two early penalties plagued the Trojans.  On 2nd and 19, a Camron Williams pass was picked off by Drew Plantz, giving Chesapeake the ball in Portsmouth territory.

Cameron Shockley’s 3 runs and a targeting penalty would set up the Panthers in scoring position. They would give the ball right back, as Jacob Harris would be picked off by Trevin Brooks.  This is where the Chase Heiland show would begin. He had 3 carries on this drive; one for 20, another for 61, and he would punch it in the endzone with a one-yard touchdown run. This would give Portsmouth a 7-0 lead.

Another 3 and out from the Panthers would lead to Portsmouth getting the ball around midfield. Chase Heiland would get 5 carries on the drive, and the Trojans would punch it in with a two-yard rushing touchdown. This would extend the Portsmouth lead to 14-0, early in the second quarter.

Chesapeake would get the ball moving on their next drive, with a little help from a late hit penalty. However, penalties would come back to haunt them, as they would have 3 penalties and brought up a 3rd and 27 in Portsmouth territory. Jacob Harris would throw his second interception of the drive to Dylan Sanderlin, wiping out all the Panther’s momentum.

Heiland would start the following Trojans drive with a 17-yard run, with only a minute left on the clock. However, an intentional grounding penalty would stall the drive.

Portsmouth would go into the half with a 14-0 lead.

Heiland’s hot streak would continue his hot streak and get the Trojans down the field in a hurry. A 20-yard run from Heiland would put them into the red zone. Levaughn Cobb would cap off the drive with a rushing touchdown giving the Trojans a comfortable 21-0 lead.

The Portsmouth defense was flying all over the field tonight and they would stop the Chesapeake offense once again.

The Trojans would get down the field again and Andrew Berry would extend the lead to 28-0 would a one-yard rushing touchdown.

Chesapeake would get the ball rolling on the next drive with a crazy catch from Dannie Maynard. The Panthers would march down the field, as Philip Thatcher would cap off the drive with a touchdown run. This would cut the Trojan lead to 28-7.

Portsmouth would attempt to run out the clock the rest of the clock and were successful in doing so after trading possessions.

A 15-yard Levaughn Cobb run would lead to two quarterback kneels.  Portsmouth would end the game winning 28-7.

The Trojans improve to 4-3 on the year and 3-1 in conference play. They will travel to Fairland to take on the Dragons next week.

The Panthers go to 3-4 on the year, and 0-4 in conference play.  They will host South Point next week.
