TVC-Hocking Boys Standings
1. Belpre Golden Eagles | 7-4 (Conf. 4-0)
Belpre added their fourth conference win of the season after taking down Trimble 57-50 Friday night. With the win, the Golden Eagles also took sole possession of first place in the TVC-Hocking.
This week begins by taking on Marietta on Tuesday night in Belpre. Then, on Friday there is another big TVC-Hocking matchup against Waterford. If the Golden Eagles take another win, they can begin to separate themselves at the top of the conference. — Andrew Bowlby
T-2. Trimble Tomcats | 6-3 (Conf. 3-1)
The Trimble Tomcats rang in the new year this past week with games against Berne Union and Belpre. Last Wednesday the Tomcats only allowed 18 points in their game against the Rockets. They won 58-18. A couple days later they took on the Belpre Golden Eagles to decide the leader of the TVC-Hocking.
Until their meeting, the two squads were tied for first in the conference with 3-0 records. The two clubs kept it close, but Belpre came out on top winning 57-50. With the loss, Trimble falls to second place in the Hocking. Next week Trimble faces Wellston on Tuesday, and the Federal Hocking Lancers on Friday. — Hailey Hollinger
T-2.. Federal Hocking Lancers | 6-4 (Conf. 3-1)
Federal Hocking only had one game this past week against conference foes Southern, as they also dominated this one by a final score of 67-29. It was an all-out show for the senior duo of Andrew Airhart and Tariq Cottrill, with Airhart dropping 29 points, and Cottrill finishing with 12.
The Lancers have a big week of games coming up as they welcome Alexander on Tuesday, then travel to conference opponents Trimble Friday night, and on Saturday have a massive challenge waiting for them in the form of South Webster. — Gavin Carrig
4. Waterford Wildcats | 5-5 (Conf. 3-2)
The Waterford boys bounced back this week, winning both contests. The Wildcats started the week with a dominating win over Frontier High School, 53-34. Waterford got three days of rest before travelling to Eastern to take on their conference rivals. The Wildcats managed to eke out a victory over the Eagles, 55-53.
After losing two tight contests last week against rival Fort Frye and Nelsonville-York, Waterford is on the right path heading towards their game against the conference-leading Belpre Golden Eagles this week. — Charlie Ihlenfeld
T-5. Southern Tornadoes | 4-6 (Conf. 0-4)
Southern had a tough schedule over the last week and a half. First, they faced a West Virginia opponent against Ravenswood. The Tornadoes were swept away, losing 69-35. Then, this past weekend they took on Federal Hocking on Friday, and Crooksville on Saturday.
The Tornadoes lost both of those games by a combined 55 points. While things haven’t gone well for the Tornadoes, they do have a chance later in the week to face one-win Eastern. — Andrew Bowlby
T-5. Eastern Eagles | 1-10 (Conf. 0-4)
The Eastern Eagles boys have acquired their first win of the season. The Eagles tipped off against Point Pleasant away from home and exited with a 50-47 win. Three days later the boys suffered a close loss against the Waterford Wildcats, the Eagles lost by only two points with the final score being 55-53.
It seems that Eastern has entered 2024 with a different approach to their game. In nine of the Eagles ten losses, they allowed more than 63 points. The defensive effort has been improved from the Eagles in the new year. In order to see more wins, this defensive effort must become routine for the Eagles. — Stephen Koroly
TVC-Hocking Girls Standings
T-1. Waterford Wildcats | 10-1 (Conf. 4-1)
The Waterford girls have climbed back to the top of the conference on the back of a spectacular week of basketball. On Thursday, the Wildcats traveled to Belpre and routed the conference leaders, 56-34. The victory cemented an impressive stretch for Waterford star Kendall Sury.
Sury led the winning effort with 17 points, and Avery Wagner and Elsie Malec each contributed 11 points. On Saturday, the Wildcats hosted rival Fort Frye in a defensive slugfest. Wagner blocked six shots as Waterford dispatched the Cadets 37-27. The Wildcats will hit the road twice this week, taking on Waynesdale and conference rival Eastern. — Charlie Ihlenfeld
T-1. Federal Hocking Lancers | 9-3 (Conf. 4-1)
The Lady Lancers have had a perfect last week and a half of play. Federal Hocking began their six-game home stand with a win over Vinton County by a score of 49-32. Sophomore Takira Walker went on to finish with 16 points, and Jaylee Osborne dropped 12 to her name.
The Lancers then kept that fire going, with an absolute bloodbath of a win over conference opponents Trimble 73-26. As a team in this game, Federal Hocking dropped 14 three pointers, with freshman McKayla Nelson draining seven of those, she finished with a game-high 25 points. Walker finished with 13 on the night, and Brenlee Cottrill added 12 as well.
The Lancers do not play until Thursday with the reverse fixture against Belpre in a battle for first place in the conference. — Gavin Carrig
T-1. Belpre Golden Eagles | 7-3 (Conf. 4-1)
With a loss to Waterford on Thursday night, Belpre entered a tight three-way tie for the TVC-Hocking’s top spot. The Golden Eagles also dropped a game against Marietta 64-26.
Now, after only playing two games in the last 11 days, Belpre will play three games this week vs. Nelsonville-York, Federal Hocking and Athens. — Andrew Bowlby
4. Trimble Tomcats | 3-6 (Conf. 1-3)
Last Thursday, the Trimble Lady Tomcats traveled to Stewart with hopes of disrupting the Hocking’s standings. However, the Tomcats were not able to bring home the win. Trimble lost 73-26, but they hope to rebound with a conference win this upcoming Thursday when they play the Southern Tornadoes. — Hailey Hollinger
5. Southern Tornadoes | 3-6 (Conf. 1-4)
Thursday night Southern got its first TVC-Hocking win of the season taking down Eastern 34-30. Coming off their first win vs. a conference squad, it will be a busy week for the Tornadoes.
Facing two TVC-Ohio teams in River Valley and Meigs on Monday and Saturday respectively. Southern will look for TVC-Hocking win two when they meet Trimble on Thursday. — Andrew Bowlby
6. Eastern Eagles | 1-9 (Conf. 0-4)
The Eastern Girls have won their first game this season. The ladies defeated the 0-11 Berne Union Rockets in convincing fashion. Winning by 25 points, 50-25. This is Jim Simpsons first ever win with the Eagles.
In order to not make this his only win of the season, the youthful Eagles must continue to build team chemistry and continue to rely on first year players to produce significant performances on the floor. This win may give Eastern the confidence they need to compete at a high level. — Stephen Koroly
