ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) – After a tough loss last Thursday against the River Valley Raiders, the Athens lady Bulldogs welcomed their rivals from down the road, the Nelsonville-York Buckeyes, and they proved their last loss wasn’t the beginning of a streak pulling off a 67-46 win.

The lady Bulldogs struggled out of the gate against the Buckeyes defensively. They were consistently unable to shut down star guard Airah Lavy, who picked up 19 points in the first half with some difficult shots over the Athens defense.

Several trips to the charity stripe in the first half kept Athens in the game for the first half. They headed into the locker room with just a 1-point lead of 28-27 against the Buckeyes.

In the second half, there was a major energy shift, leading to a tremendous 15-point run while preventing Nelsonville-York from putting any points on the board.

Asa Holcombe lit up for Athens after a quiet first half. She put up 20 points in the half, and with another 19 points from Olivia Smart, the Bulldogs pulled ahead with a commanding lead in the fourth quarter.

After the game, Asa Holcombe spoke on what how important this win is for the young lady Bulldog team. “It means a lot to the team,” Holcombe said. “We’re young and we’ve put a lot of work in over the summer, and it’s nice to see that work paying off.”

After this win, Athens looks to increase their non-conference record with a home matchup against Logan Elm on Thursday.
