Harvest Prep sneaks by Wheelersburg with a last minute push
< < Back toPICKERINGTON, Ohio (WOUB) — After a defensive slugfest for the majority of the game, the Harvest Prep Warriors pulled away with a win against Wheelersburg on their senior night.
Wheelersburg won last week versus Valley 41-7 while Harvest Prep is coming off their own win versus Dunbar 50-16. Tonight’s matchup was ahead of several game cancellations in the area, but still started on time.
The first quarter ended in a standstill, with three turnovers that made it defense-heavy. Wheelersburg struck first with around a 42-yard field goal. With under a minute left in the quarter, Warrior QB Colin Buff connected with Khalil Davis for a 32-yard reception and Prep’s first touchdown of the game. They’d go for a two-point conversion that would be no good.
The Pirates sailed down the field and kicked another field goal from around 40 yards out to tie the game at 6 heading into half.
Rain started pouring down in the third quarter, which wasn’t in favor of either team. The score stayed tied heading into the fourth quarter and would remain that way until late in the fourth quarter. Harvest Prep pushed down the field and ended the drive with a short-yard rush into the end zone. Another failed two-point attempt would put them ahead 12-6 with just over a minute left in the game.
Wheelersburg began their final drive with two incomplete passes. Then QB Braylon Rucker launched the ball into double coverage, which would put the ball inside the red zone. That ball was picked off by the Warriors, which won them the game with around 40 seconds left.
Harvest Prep advances their record to 5-1 and will take a break next week. They will travel to St. Vincent-St. Mary (1-4) on October 11th.
Wheelersburg falls to 2-4 and will look to bounce back with an SOC matchup next week at home versus Oak Hill.
