Kid-Friendly Screening at the Athena Cinema

WOUB Learning Lab is excited to present a kid-friendly screening of the brand-new PBS KIDS animated series, CARL THE COLLECTOR!

The new PBS KIDS animated series CARL THE COLLECTOR follows Carl, a warm-hearted raccoon who loves collecting things. The show breaks new ground as the first PBS KIDS series to feature central characters on the autism spectrum. CARL THE COLLECTOR is a show about empathy and compassion. Through its stories, the series celebrates the many different ways kids think and express themselves, while helping them explore how to participate in their communities.

This event is designed to be a welcoming, relaxed space where kids can be themselves and families can enjoy the animated series at their own pace. Feel free to pop in and out of the theater, explore fun activities, and take-home PBS KIDS resources!

The Great Thanksgiving Listen

StoryCorps

The Great Listen is a national movement that empowers young people—and people of all ages—to create an oral history of the contemporary United States by recording an interview with an elder using the free StoryCorps App.

Interviews become part of the StoryCorps Archive at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress, where they will serve as an invaluable resource for future historians. To date, thousands of high schools from all 50 states have participated, and preserved more than 180,000 interviews for The Great Listen, providing families with a priceless piece of personal history.

The Great Thanksgiving Listen is StoryCorps’ annual initiative that invites people to honor someone in their lives by recording their stories for future generations. Use the 2024 Educator Toolkit to encourage your students to spend time this holiday season listening to the untold stories of their loved ones.

Created during World War II, the Women’s Army Corps (WAC) was the women’s branch of the United States Army. 150,000 American women served in the WAC during the war. LEONARDO DA VINCI is a two-part, four-hour documentary directed by Ken Burns, Sarah Burns and David McMahon that explores the life and work of the 15th century polymath. Set against the rich and dynamic backdrop of Renaissance Italy, the film brings the artist’s towering achievements to life through his prolific personal notebooks, primary and secondary accounts of his life, and on-camera interviews with modern scholars, artists, engineers, inventors and admirers.

PBSLearningMedia will add a collection of materials from LEONARDO Da VINCI to the Ken Burns in the Classroom hub. These materials will include media-rich resources, including videos, primary sources, and classroom materials to allow grade 5-12 educators to easily bring the materials into their Social Studies, English Language Arts, and Science classrooms. Resources will present opportunities for educators and students to explore the film’s key topics and themes, including Leonardo’s innovative spirit and his wide-ranging accomplishments against the backdrop of Renaissance Italy.
