
The Spartans get revenge against the Golden Rockets

ALBANY, Ohio (WOUB) – The Alexander Spartans played host to the Wellston Golden Rockets Friday, winning by a score of 59-55.
The first quarter was a back-and-forth affair, Alexander started out with 2 technical free throws and the ball from a technical foul that was called before play started. Wes Briggs though could not miss in the first, finishing it with 7 early points for the Golden Rockets. The quarter ended with the Spartans out front, 15-13.
The second quarter was all about runs. The Golden Rockets started the quarter off hot and jumped to a 4-point lead. It wouldn’t take long for it to dissolve because of a couple of Spartan steals and an 8-0 run. Alexander’s Klaxton Hawk and Wellston’s Briggs both had double-digit points going into half with a score of 26-24 Spartans.
To start the second half, the Spartans were being fueled by their transition offense and there intense 2-3 zone defense. This did not stop Briggs from getting his points. He was on fire and kept the Golden Rockets with 21 points in the game to that point. The third quarter ended with a score of 46-39 Alexander.
The fourth quarter started with a couple points by both teams. Justin Jackson completed an and-1 to bring the Golden Rockets within 6 points but ultimately the Spartans kept their foot on the gas and ended the game with score of 59-55 Spartans.
Klaxton Hawk led all Spartan scorers with 22 points along with 6 rebounds. Issac Waller also tallied on 10 points, 10 rebounds and 7 steals.
The Wellston Golden Rockets were led by Wes Briggs with 30 points and 12 rebounds. Justin Jackson also added on 16 points and 3 assists.
Following this in-conference win, the Spartans go on to play the Jackson Ironmen January 25th.
After this loss, the Wellston Golden Rockets go on to play the Meigs Marauders January 28th.
