ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) — The Meigs Marauders (1-14, 0-9 TVC-Ohio) made their way North to take on the Athens Bulldogs (14-3, 9-0 TVC-Ohio) in the second of their two matchups from this year.
The game started off all Athens, their first 15 points coming mostly from a flurry of scoring by Quinn Banks, the Junior forward who was able to total 13 on the night, also adding 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Ella Chapman would also do her part tonight for the Bulldogs with 6 points, 4 rebounds and 5 assists, all of which led Athens to a convincing lead at the end of one.
Quarter two continued the trends from the first quarter, Asa Holcombe finding her baskets from the field and more importantly tonight, from the free throw line. That is where she would drop 7 of her 11 total points, along with her contributing 5 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals to lead the Bulldogs to a halftime lead of 36-15
The Bulldogs maintained, if not turning up their intensity in the back half of the matchup. This was shown by Lex Koopal’s 13 points and 7 rebounds, the majority of which occuring on tough shots in the paint for the Athens center, which added to their lead going into the fourth.
The last quarter held very little contrast from the rest of the game. A lot of being fouled and hitting free throws for the Bulldogs. The Athens defense also had a chance to come to play. They were able to hold Meigs to 4 second half points with their stifling defense, winning this one 62-19.
After the game, we caught up with coach Koska where he spoke of his plans to retire from the program after this season, “It was a very tough decision for me, I struggled with it a lot…, I’ve enjoyed every moment of coaching, but family’s first. It’s strictly personal.”
The Meigs Marauders look to have a better output when they face the Wellston Golden Rockets this Thursday.
The Athens Bulldogs are now set up for a massive rivalry matchup against the Alexander Spartans this Thursday, with conference title implications looming.
