MCARTHUR, Ohio (WOUB) – The Athens Lady Bulldogs rolled into McArthur only one win shy of clinching a share of the TVC-Ohio title and were able to secure their piece of the crown with a 62-33 win over the Vinton County Vikings.

The Lady Bulldogs jumped out quick, building a strong lead. They utilized some quick offensive plays, allowing for players like Ella Chapman to work the ball inside on her way to a 17-point night.

Athens wrapped up the first quarter on top 23-11 and kept things rolling into the second where they continued to prioritize offensive plays. Their aggression kept them ahead of the Vikings, who were still fighting. Players like Emma Leaming who ended the night with 15 points and 3 rebounds. The Vikings were unsuccessful in closing the gap before halftime, heading into the locker room down 37-15.

The second half saw the Lady Bulldogs scoring slowed down in the third, only picking up nine points in the quarter compared to the 23 and 14 they scored in the previous two. However, their focus on defense kept them ahead. Vinton County only scored seven points in the third, and players like Lex Koopal who ended the night with 6 blocks.

In the home stretch the Lady Bulldogs continued to focus on holding the Vikings at bay. It was rare that Vinton County found themselves in the paint, having to work the ball outside and search for open looks.

Ultimately Athens was able to build on their lead and come out on top 62-33, clinching a share of the TVC-Ohio for the second year in a row.

Later this week, they’ll host the Nelsonville-York Buckeyes in their final conference game of the season. A win in that matchup would secure the TVC-Ohio title for Athens for the second year in a row.

The Vinton County Vikings are set for back-to-back matchups against the Wellston Golden Rockets later this week.
