RACINE, Ohio (WOUB) — The Southern Tornadoes (14-3, 8-0) hosted the Waterford Wildcats (7-9, 2-5), as both teams approached the end of TVC-Hocking competition. Waterford is hoping to continue their rebound after a mid-season rebirth while the Tornadoes are attempting to remain undefeated in conference-play.
The whole game was a showcase of physical basketball, as both teams contested every shot, pass and rebound. Southern would just bring a little more to the table- as the Tornadoes take the game 44-34.
Both squads would show their determination, as all players left it on the court. The Wildcats and Tornadoes would lock up at 11-11 all to end the first. It was truly an evenly matched game, as neither team would let the other escape.
The second quarter would be one of even lower scores than the first, as the Tornadoes would be held to just three points. One-third of the points the team’s points would come from a free throw from Jake Wickline.
Southern Coach Jeff Caldwell knew that this was going to be a tough game and knew that Waterford would take them to the limit, “Both teams fought hard until the end, we knew it was going to be a tough game. Both teams were playing great defense.” Southern’s defense would help propel the team to a victory.
Both teams would go into the locker room knowing that the teams had to change the style of play in the game. The Tornados scored more points in the third than the team did in the first half. Aided by eight points from Junior point guard Andre Chandler, Southern gained a lead at the end of third, 30 to 25.
In the fourth, the Wildcats had to make a comeback, but the Tornadoes were not going to take the Waterford attack lying down. As the Tornadoes would put up 14 points in the fourth, a deficit that the Wildcats couldn’t pull out of. Waterford managed only nine points.
With this win, the Tornadoes have at least clinched a share of the title in the TVC-Hocking. Southern still has five games left on the season, two of which being in conference. Their remaining Hocking games are against Belpre on Friday and Eastern next Friday.
Waterford has three conference games left, two of which are this week against Federal Hocking on Thursday and Friday.
