ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) — After an exciting sweep against rival Miami this past weekend, the Ohio Bobcats (31-13) made their way back to the field ready to host the Ohio State Buckeyes (38-10-1). Since 2012, the Bobcats and Buckeyes have faced off a total of 15 times, resulting in only three Ohio wins.
Starting off strong, Ohio’s Anna Wise was able to hold down the fort, ending the top with no hits and no runs. With Ohio up to the plate, the lady’s were able to make the most of their at bat. After CiCi Keidel found her way to first base, Brenna Farmer would double out to left field. One play later, Emma Hoffner would bat in Keidel, giving Ohio a 1-0 lead to round out the first.
Into the second, Ohio State made it clear that they were not backing off, as Kaitlyn Farley would homer to left field, sending herself and Sami Bewick around the bases. In the bottom, Ohio was able to do little in the way of hitting, finishing the inning with the Buckeyes leading 2-1.
However, this pitcher change did not fool OSU, as they quickly added three more runs to the scoreboard. Into the bottom, the Bobcats were not giving up without a fight. With bases loaded, Emma Hoffner would single to first, batting in CiCi Keidel and Lauren Yuhas. The inning would end with Ohio State leading 8-3.
From there, Ohio State would run away with the game, adding seven more runs and forcing Ohio to switch out their pitcher twice more. The matchup would end with the Buckeyes winning 15-5, mercying the Bobcats in five innings.
A standout player from the OSU hitting squad was senior Kami Kortokrax, who hit a homerun at three out of her four at bats and had five RBI’s. Ohio Head Coach Jenna Hall talks about what her team can do against a power hitter like Kortokrax.
“She’s a quality player…for us it’s just about when we do have the opportunities to make a play, we have to make them,” Ohio head coach Jenna Hall said.
The Ohio Bobcats, ranked first in the MAC, will be on the road this Friday for a weekend series against second ranked Central Michigan.
The Ohio State Buckeyes will be back in Columbus Friday to host Purdue for their weekend series.
